I'm a cultural anthropologist who specializes in political anthropology. I study people and how they go about handling the
problems of political life. I've done fieldwork in and around Tampa Bay. I've also worked on national and international
research projects for the Annie E. Casey Foundation, the National Institute of Mental Health, and the National Institutes
of Health.
I hope to bring some of my skills as an interviewer and ethnographer to my job as a state legislator. I will listen to
people and I will make recommendations as a true representative of my district!
I'm married and I have two stepsons and a daughter. I've lived in or near District 60 for almost
all of my life. I was born in Massachusetts but we moved here in 1972, when my Dad took a job at the University of South Florida.
I earned all three of my degrees at USF. Go Bulls!
I mainly earn my living as an college teacher. I've taught at Hillsborough
Community College Dale Mabry, HCC Brandon, Manatee Community College, Florida Metropolitan University, and the University
of South Florida. This summer I completed a contract with Eckerd College's Program for Experienced Learners; and I enjoyed
it very much!
Now I'm teaching at the University of Tampa. I love the classic buildings of UT and I am having
a great time teaching the super students.
I've taught anthropology, sociology, cultural anthropology, and political anthropology, a senior level elective in my
field. For the University of Tampa, I'm teaching political science.
I've been involved in my community in different ways my whole life. I was a DJ for WMNF in the 1980's and early 1990's.
I have done volunteer work for the Earth Charter, MOSI, and Unity Leadership (a project group within Equality Florida). In
2004, I canvassed for John Kerry. I worked for Tampa City Councilwoman Mary Mulhern during both of her runs for office, including
her successful 2007 campaign.
I've been a member of the American Anthropological Association for several years as well as the Society for Applied Anthropology.
I'm a past president of Graduate Assistants United, the University of South Florida graduate assistants' union. I earned
health care benefits and a salary increase during my term in office.
I'm a member of the Platform Issues and Legislation Committee of the Hillsborough County Democratic Executive Committee.
This year I hope to act as one of the Democratic Executive Committee's precinct committee men - Let's paint Florida BLUE!
